ABOUT

The William Commanda bridge is a bike/walk path connecting Ottawa to Gatineau. Ottawa has done a great job on bike paths, and, this recent conversion is now a very popular connector. Well done Ottawa and Gatineau, via the NCC. Give you a win on this one, but maybe not the complete destruction of Lebreton flats in the 60s (but I digress). I imagine this bridge was once very important as a rail line connecting industry on the Gatineau side, coming into where the current LRT line is now. Back in the day, there was a fair bit of industry along this rail line running parallel to Preston Street. My grandfather, who once ran a furniture store on Welington Street later in life, as a teen, saved a boy who had jumped off this bridge and fell into distress. Whenever I cycle past or on it, I think about the history here. Mostly though, I see the smiles on the cyclists who get to take in the increbible river scenery as they cross.

Near: Ottawa

Go: Bike along the Ottawa river to or from downtown on the west side, you'll find it. Same for Gatineau side.
